On June 15, 2026, Heritage Calgary announced that the XV Winter Olympics 90m Ski Jump will be the 1,000th site added to the Inventory of Evaluated Historic Resources.

The XV Winter Olympics 90m Ski Jump (also known as the Calgary 1988 Olympic Winter Games 90m Ski Jump) is located southwest of the Bow River within Canada Olympic Park, known as the Canadian Winter Sport Institute (WinSport) since 2009. An intact and impressive facility, the site possesses heritage value for its associations with the 15th Winter Olympics.

“Reaching 1,000 evaluated historic resources is an important milestone for Heritage Calgary and for our city,” said Erika Topola, Executive Director of Heritage Calgary. “Each site added to the Inventory helps tell Calgary’s story and reflects the people, places, and moments that have shaped our community. This new evaluation recognizes not only an iconic landmark of the 1988 Winter Olympics, but also the layers of history connected to this landscape over generations.”

The XV Winter Olympics Ski Jump was designed by prolific Calgary architect JH Cook. With a height of 58 meters and its situation on the Paskapoo Slopes overlooking the Trans-Canada Highway, the ski jump is an iconic landmark for locals and visitors to the city since its construction in 1986. For millennia, the land where the ski jump area is located sustained a rich history of traditional land use for hunting and wintering.

The evaluation of the site will be added to the Inventory by the Heritage Calgary board of directors in 2026. As a charitable Civic Partner of The City of Calgary, Heritage Calgary maintains the Inventory of Evaluated Historic Resources (The Inventory) on The City’s behalf. The Inventory is an online database listing sites that have been identified to possess significant heritage value. Inclusion on the Inventory is a formal acknowledgement of heritage value, but in most cases does not extend legal protection to the property.

The announcement was made by Heritage Calgary at their Report to the Community hosted at Contemporary Calgary. The event featured guest speakers Alex Sarian, President & CEO of Werklund Centre; Barry M. Heck, President & CEO of WinSport; and Charlotte Mitchell, former ski jumper, PhD candidate and co-host of Ski Like a Girl podcast, who spoke about the history of Calgary’s 1988 Winter Olympics.

The Report to the Community also recognized Heritage Calgary’s 25th anniversary in 2025, celebrating a legacy of impact while looking ahead to the opportunities and responsibilities that accompany continued growth and commitment to ensuring Calgary’s shared heritage informs and inspires future generations.
