John A. Tweddle Residence

Templeton Residence – 206 Scarboro Avenue SW (Scarboro) Year Built: ca. 1915

Evaluated as a Community Historic Resource

Scarboro, known as Sunalta Addition at the time, was owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company who engaged the renowned John Charles Olmsted (1852-1920) in 1909 to design a “Picturesque suburb”. The Templeton Residence, constructed in ca 1915, is a prominent example of the Olmsted Plan early residences that met and established the dominant character of the street. (Symbolic Value – Community-wide Value)

John Wellington Templeton (1877-1936), the original owner, purchased the double-lot to have the residence built for his family who lived there from 1915-1941 during which time he established the Alberta Steam Laundry Co. Ltd. in Calgary and is known as “one of the first men to open a cleaning and dyeing plant in Western Canada”. (Person Value – Community-wide Value)

The Templeton Residence is an exemplary example of a one- and one-half-storey Craftsman-style home distinguished by its steep-pitched, side-gabled and bell-shaped roofline with front double gabled-dormers, a rear large wall dormer, prominent full-width, raised front verandah with brick piers, and upper-level balcony. (Style Value – Community-wide Value)
